本作は、1999年から20年以上にわたり毎年発売されているバスケットボールシミュレーションゲームの最新作。最先端のProPLAYテクノロジーを駆使した次世代機版では、シリーズ史上最もリアルなバスケットボール体験と究極の操作性が実現している。

また、「マイNBA」に追加された6つめの「時代」や、最高の選手になるための足場を固める「The W」、よりコンパクトかつインタラクティブになった「ザ・シティ」などのモードも収録されている。

現世代機版のプレイヤーは、アップデートされた「マイキャリア」モードでNBA選手として頂点を目指すキャリアを築いたり、新しくなった「マイチーム」モードで世界中のプレイヤーたちと競い合ったりすることが可能。

そのほかにも、クエストに挑み報酬を獲得しライバルと戦う新たな「ネイバーフッド」の探索を楽しめる。
